Madeira is characterized by a mild climate all year round and an extraordinary profusion of flowers: birds of paradise and tritomes, agapanthus and hydrangeas in umbels earned him the nickname of "floating floral island in the Atlantic." And quietly, the beauty of the Atlantic has become a paradise for hikers.

The first Portuguese word which hikers learn on Madeira is certainly "Levada". The levadas are narrow irrigation channels that cross the island in all directions. On maintenance roads built next to these channels, one can explore the most remote corners of Madeira without climb very high. Just over half of the routes in this guide are hiking levada that take you through fertile land cultivated through artistically shaped terraces in impressive gorges and towards unspoiled valleys with subtropical vegetation of evergreen trees.

This volcanic island is a territory for mountaineers. The central massif at nearly 1900 m above sea routes offer something for everyone. Royal touring the island - a spectacular course fashioned into the rock from the Arieiro to Pico Ruivo - has a particularly alpine character. Besides discrete shepherds trails and other adventurous steep paths along the coast, there are also "veredas" or old communication paths connecting the villages, there are still a few decades, the only means to access isolated villages.

For its neufième edition, this hiking guide has been thoroughly updated. GPS tracks can be downloaded to all routes. The clear presentations, detailed route descriptions, detailed maps and informative altitude profiles, allow good course rating. The 60 proposed hikes, all illustrated with beautiful pictures, offering so many ideas that a single visit is not enough to discover all.

216 pages, 188 color photos, 60 altitude profiles, 60 maps at 1: 25,000 / 1: 50,000, 1 general map at 1: 250,000
